Back Georgi Jakovlev
Lithuanian icon painter Georgi Jakovlev is one of three masters in the Baltics who have been blessed and appointed by the Grand Council of the Church of Old Believers. Jakovlev started studying icon painting as a young boy from his uncle, who in turn had learned the art from his uncle. By now, the master has practiced this rare artistic field for longer than 20 years, during which he has painted more than 700 icons. “Icon painting is indeed quite difficult and I have to get necessary materials from a variety of sources. For example, correct mineral colours that I have to comminute before usage, come from Moscow,” says master Jakovlev. He has painted icons also for several Estoninan churches, including the Church of Slumber of the Mother of God at Tuhalaane. Master Jakovlev also directs icon painting courses, teaching the traditions, specificity and painting technique of Old Believers’ icon.
