Lecture: The influence of art and ambiance on Christian life

Thursday, 29th of October 11.30

“God established mysterious and admirable relations between, on the one hand, certain forms, colors, sounds, perfumes, and flavors and, on the other, certain states of soul.” [Revolution and Counter-Revolution]. In other words, God established a close link between outward aspects of the material world and dispositions of the soul toward good or evil, toward truth or error, virtue or vice. The Church took this law of nature into consideration by developing architectural styles [gothic], music, liturgy in order to educate her children through the centuries. The Revolution also uses arts, fashions, architecture, mechanics, etc, in order to change mentalities. Modern architecture doesn’t pursue beauty or the sublime but mainly functionality, vulgarity and ugliness. The change of styles started with Humanism and the Renaiscence.
